Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
