Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
