Individuals who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism following their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The organization is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who took the position in May, has inherited this persistent issue that has plagued the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate shared they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," Hickey stated. "We have the common objective, we want to end clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven members of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

They added the Pope was "tender" about their own story and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," Hickey commented. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is advocating that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered document emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a connection and persisting to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey commented.

Hickey added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the story concludes - he valued that."
