British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
